SPRITS PROTECTION LEAGUE
(Per Press Association.) Gisborne, December 21. A well-attended meeting last evening lecided to form a Gisborne centre of'\e Sports Protection League. J. W. Man, Crown Prosecutor, presided and after the aims of the League had been outlined by the general secretary A. f * Paape, J. W. Nolan was elected president of the local ceutie, and a strong committee was appointed.l

grand military TOURNAMENT
Palmerston, December 21. tiry.fine entries are being received for the Grand Military Tournament on December 30 and January 1. There are already fourteen mounted teams entered from regiments ranging from Bliff to Whangarei, thirty-seven eutrfes for swordsmanship events, and heavy entries for infantry events lind route marching. The entries generally constitute a record. ‘• r T ' I BIG BOROUGH LOANS.
Palmerston, December 21. Borough loans of £BOOO for various street and other works, and £4550 for sewerage extensions, were carried today by 19 and 52 votes respectivly.
LIGHT-FINGERED
Wellington, December 21. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Isabella Harrington, alias Bain, was charged with the theft of £l2O from Geo. Barrett. In connection with the same offence Henry Hilditch was charged with receiving the sum of £97 Is 9d, the property of Geo. Barrett, well knowing it to have been stolen. Each accused pleaded guilty, and they were committed to the Supreme Court.
A DECK ACCIDENT
Wellington, December 21. At the inquest held to-day on William Wrixon, who died on Tuesday as the result of being knocked from the deck of the Manuka to the wharf, by a sling, on the 15th, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The Coroner said that some steps should lie taken to- provide workers with some protection on deck. SLY-GROGGER FINED.
Dunedin, December 21. At Owaka yesterday Chas. Childs, of Puketiro, was charged with selling liquor in the Clutha no-license district. Evidence was given as to the purchase of a bottle of whisky for 10s, and defendant was fined £2O, with £3 16s 6d costs.
HEAVY LOSS BY FIRE
Wellington, December 22. A lire at Lower Hutt yesterday destroyed the residence of Alfred Feist. The house was insured in Jhe London and Liverpool office for £SOO, and the contents for £IOO. Feist is a heavy loser.
BOARDERS’ NARROW ESCAPE
Gisborne, December 22
The Gladstone boarding-house, owned by Hamon, and occupied by Ferguson, was gutted by lire this morning. The boarders had narrow' escapes. The building was insured for £BSO in' the Royal office and the contents for £IOO in the Yorkshire office.
