HAWERA WINTER SHOW.

SMALL LOSS ON YEAR’S AVORKLNG.

The report presented at the annual meeting of the South Taranaki V\ inier Show Co., Ltd., stated that the result of last year’s operations showed a small loss of £2l. included in cue expenses, however, u ere certain iinioums really due to tno previous year, which would have shown an actual profit of L 22. Tne capital of the company stands at £2 102 10s. Hie sum oi £312 is due lor unpaid calls, and an effort must he made to get oh is in. By the expenditure on i.md and buildings of idUoU during me year, the future requirements or the company are provided. In connection witn the actual show, the report mentions the difficulty experienced with machinery exhibitors, and cue special efforts made to attract exuioits. Show expenses were much higher than the directors consider they will be in future. The skating link, owing to various causes, was not so successful as the previous year.

The future, however, ol the show is assured. The chairman, Mr A. AA T . Gillies, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, expressed regret that tho 'result had not been better, but tho difficulties of conducting the winter show this year had been groat. A number of implement-makers had not exhibited—not because A they had anything against Hawcra, but because they had decided not to exhibit at any show—and the directors, in preference to allowing the show to he a poor one, and perhaps crippling the company almost at its inception, had made special offers to make the show a good one, though they realised that the company’s profits would suffer by these special efforts. The Governor had been invited to bo present, and the company’s thanks were duo to him for his attendance, which added greatly to the prestige of the show; and thanks were also due to the Agricultural Department for the splendid exhibit it had forwarded. Several items in last year’s .expenditure would not recur, and though lie was not advocating a cheese-paring policy, lie could see where money could be saved, Rersonally he had always felt doubtful of the success of the skating, and might say that if the directors had run tho skating rink themselves the result would have been a loss instead of a small profit. The position of affairs was, the speaker continued, sound, and ho felt sure that a good show could be run at a profit for the future.

Mr J. R. Corrigan seconded the motion for adoption of tho report and balance-sheet, which was carried without dissent. The three retiring directors, Messrs Gillies, AVyborn, and Rage, were unanimously re-elected to the directorate, and Mr J. A. Turton was reappointed auditor.
