ILLEGAL BETTING.

(Per Press Association.) Timaru, December 17

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, V.'ra. Jordan, hairdresser and tobacconist, Newman and George Mason, the two latter formerly bookmakers and warned off racecourses, were charged with making bets in Tinvaru on events in the late November meeting. The chief witness, Edward Travis O’Brien, probationer constable from Christchurch, gave evidence that Jordan made a bet with him in his shop, Newman in the street and Mason in a hotel. Jordan’s case was adjourned to Wednesday ior the evidence of Smith, saloon assistant, who did pot appear when called, and a warrant was ordered for his arrest. Decision in the other two cases was reserved to Wednesday.
