A STORMY HOUSE. Sydney, December 18. The Assembly has ended its stormy session with a stormy scene. At the conclusion of business Mr McGowan, the Premier, wished the members the seasonal compliments, and hoped they would “let bygones be bygones.” Mr Wade, replying, said it was all very well to do as Mr McGowen said, but they could not forget the degredation to which they had been subjected during the past three months. The Speaker called Mr Wade to order twice. Thereupon Mr Wade left the House, several members of the Opposition following and making an angry demonstration against the Speaker, who immediately adjourned the House to February 17th. Passing through the lobbies the Speaker was hooted and jeered, and cheers were given for “liberty.” There was high excitement. In tne Legislative Council the Income Tax Bill was passed.
ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.
Sydney, December 18. A conference adopted the recommendations in favour of securing uniformity in the appointment and examination of referees, and the securing of a visit from an English team. The conference adjourned till Thursday, when the committee presents a report on the proposed Australian council control, Mew Zealand standing separate. SHIPPING RATES* INCREASED. Sydney, December 18. From to-day the inter-State shipping fares and freights will be increased by 5 per cent to cover the increased expenditure as the result of the recent improved conditions the Court awarded the seamen. PASSENGERS QUARANTINED. Sydney, December 18. Seventy of the Zealandia’s immigrants have been quarantined. None are seriously affected. BIG CHRISTMAS MAIL. ; ; Sydney, December 18. A record English Christmas mail has been received, amounting to 315,000 letters. THE A.M.P. ASSOCIATION. Melbourne, December 18. At the annual meeting of the National Mutual Life Association, the chairman, in favouring the adoption of the report, said the new business was the largest ever transacted. Thirteen thousand four hundred and eigh-ty-six new. policies had been issued, insuring £3,442,833, yielding annual premiums amounting to £124,826. The total income for the year was £1,198,148. The report was adopted, and the retiring directors re-elected. CARGO SALVAGED. (Received 19, 10.30 a.m.) Sydney, December 19. The whole of the Brooklyn’s cargo has been saved and the vessel has been handed to the underwriters. CAB-DRIVERS’ STRIKE. (Received 19, 10.30 a.m.) Sydney, December 19. The cab-drivers are striking against the proposal to hire vehicles at six to seven shillings and about a hundred are affected. SIR WILLIAM RUSSELL. (Received 19, 10.30 a.m.) Sydney, December 19. Sir William and Lady Russell are passengers by the Mooltan.
