THE TERRITORIALS.
SCHOOL OF INSTRUCTION
1 At the old Masonic Kail last .night a number of Territorials desirous of promotion paraded and were given instruction by Sergeant-Major Ballinger. in the course of some remarks the Sergeant-Major spoke of several famous British regiments and impressed on those present tlie desirability of making and keeping for the Taranaki regiment a reputation such as that held by some of the regiments named. Ho said that in three or four years he hoped that the eleventh regiment will have the best reputation in the Dominion. The parts of the regiment should stick together and should have a pride in the regiment, so that everybody should be proud to belong to the regiment. Everybody should endeavour to make himself proficient in all that pertains to Ids duties. A company of infantry consisted of 120 men. ft was commanded by a captain, two lieutenants, five sergeants, four corporals, six lancecorporals, two buglers or drummers, one pioneer and three signallers. In camp or in the field smaller sections of the company were always quartered together, so that the non-com-missioned officers were always able to know their men. A.regiment consisted \of eight companies or 1021 men. The Pi company, to which his hearers belonged, was one of the companies in the eleventh regiment. The Sergeant-Major pointed out that Captain Lumpen was the only salaried officer connected with the regiment, the head of the regiment being Lieut. - Col. Malone. He stressed the point that the position of Colonel, or, for that matter, any other, was open to any man in the Territorial forces'. The lecturer then dealt, with, the organisation of divisions and 'brigades/ questioning the recruits afterwards on what had been said.
