THE ELINGAMITE.
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUIRY
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, December 11
At the Elingamite enquiry to-day Captain Watson gave evidence that in connection with the finding that Captain Attwood’s speed was twelve knots or more his opinion was that it was about Ilf knots. Had the West King not been incorrectly charted Cantain Attwood would have escaped it altogether. The currents did not always tend in the direction shown by the , chart and that used by Captain was worse than useless—it was misleading. Captain Attwood. in the course of his evidence, stated that the Elingamite’s course was changed, as he considered by dead reckoning that the vessel was abreast of the Three Kings. On the previous two trips there had heon a strong southerly set hut on this occasion it was northward. To have stopped the ship would have rendered her unmanageable. T-Tis calculations were made on the only chart available, but he now knew they carried him to a position of danger.
