The Admiral is advised that H.M.S. Torch, while cruising in the vicinity of Noumea, lost its propeller, probably as the result of touching an uncharted rock. By the help of s.Uls she reached Noumea, and remains there until help arrives. H.M.S. Pycho, from Melbourne, has been ordered to Noumea to tow the Torch back to Sydney.

To-day was the hottest day -since December, 1909, the thermometer re-

gistering 101 deg. in the shade. . A scorching wind prevailed. Numbers of bush fires started in the outer suburbs.
