Raymond Martin, the four-year-old nephew of Mrs. Riley, died from injuries sustained in the lire at Mount Eden on Thursday night. Napier, December 11. Two months ago the Borough Council’s strong-room was rifled and nearly £6OO stolen. All efforts fo tiaee the money or discover the thief faded. On Friday the office hoy, in searching amongst old papers in the strong-room, discovered a “plant,” £52 being hidden away in a large Borough envelope. Police aevivity has been renewed. Wellington, December 11. Two changes have been made in the New Zealand team for the Australasian athletic championships. A. Duncan (Wellington) replaces Wooclger in the sprint events, the latter’s services being unavailable. 1). Smith (Auckland) is added as support for the two walking events. The value of the principal New Zealand products passed by the Customs for export during the month ended November 30th is £1,146,503, ho figures for the corresponding month lastyear being £1,041,183. The details are as follows: Butter, £252,248; cheese, £154,165; frozen beef, £786; frozen mutton, carcases, £28,480, legs and pieces £273; frozen lambs, £4317 ; wheat, £6795; oats, £592; potatoes, £371; hemp, £13,707; rabbits, £lB,231; tow, £1487; kauri gum, £lB,491; grain and pulse (other than oats and wheat), £3289; hops, £898; hides, £11,856; skins (all kinds), £40,052; wool, £388,192; gold, £142,512. The number' of persons who arrived in New Zealand during last October is 3169, while there were 2366 departures. The figures for 1910 were: Arrivals 3411, departures 2124. Palmerston, December 11. Mr George F. Hawkins, a very old resident of Palmerston North, died yesterday, aged 92 years. He was a well-known solicitor in the early days. Blenheim, December 11.
Four business premises in High Street were destroyed by fire this morning—Sowman (grocer), Smith, (butcher), White (commission agent), and Dalgety and Co. The fire started in Bowman’s shop. A heavy wind was blowing, but this dropped in time for the brigade to save the remainder of the block. Sowman had a heavy stock for the Christmas season, and being uninsured is a heavy loser. Dalgety lost a number of books and records which were either burnt or damaged, amongst these being a set of records of a period of thirty years, saved from a previous fire. Bowman’s and Smith’s shops were owned by Rabone, and were insured for £450 in the Phoenx- office. White’s furniture was insured for, £SO in the Phoenix, Dalgety’s, stock for £IOO in the Alliance and Smith’s for £6O in the Guardian. In the Supreme Court to-day two Burnham boys were brought up for sentence for theft, j! Both said they would sooner go to. gaol than back to ’Burnham, where they got knocked about.
