THE ELTHAM CARNIVAL.
Nothing is more remarkable in the field of sport than the manner in which the great annual Axemen’s Carnival at Eltham has gone on steadily gaining in popularity, while almost every other branch of athletics has been losing ground. For the past eight years the Axemen’s Carnival on Boxing Day and the following day, has proved easily the principal attraction during the Christmas holidays, and judging by present indications will continue to bo so. This year the entries are right up to record mark, and include practically all the proven champions. Mr Chas. O’Rourke, the all-round champion of the South Island, is competing, and many will attend specially to witness the encounter between Dave Pretty and the'.redoubtable Southerenor. As heretofore further improvements are being made to the grounds, additional facilities for handling the huge crowd in the din-ing-room, and, altogether, everything the energetic directors believed may be necessary for the convenience and enjoyment of competitor or patron has been attended to.
