(Per Press AssociatioM 1 Auckland, November 29. The third trial of Martha Jane D'Skaughnessy on a charge of murdering Elsie Alexander Holland at Kingsland on June 13th last was continued in the Supreme Court to-day. The jury found prisoner guilty of manslaughter, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account or the suspense she had undergone during the last three trials. Sentence was deferred. Daniel George Saunders, a young married man, who Mas last week >rought from Melbourne in custody, ivas charged at.the Police Court this aiorning that he left the Dominion .vithout making adequate provision for the maintenance of his wife and three children. After the sub-inspector had commented on the frequency of such cases of abandonment of young children, his Worship stated that tins was .i bad case of desertion, and imposed a sentence of six months' hard labour. Gisborne, November 29. The fourth boxing carnival opened co-night, in the heavy-weight contest, Jiv Low (11.10) beat A. Watson (11.6). Bert Lowe (11.3) beat A. J. Martin. (12.1). It was a splendid fight of tour rounds. In the latter event there was much dissent against the rer'eree's decision. The final'-is to be bought to-morrow-. Feilding, November 29. Recently the Rev. Mr Hammond, a no-license lecturer, speaking at Feilding, said the pictorial advertisement of empty shops at Masterton was false and misleading, and those responsible for it liars. ; Mr H. McManaway, president of the Licensed Victuallers' Association, challenged Mr Hammond, and said he would give £25 to the hospital if the matter for the advertisement was false. Two adjudicators were appointed to examine matters, and Messrs W. J'. B. Trewin, barrister, and ex-Mayor, and H. Mcintyre, M.A., L.C.8., proceeded to Masterton on Saturday and presented their judgment to-day. It is that one premises (photographed twice) is made to appear like two shops. Ihe occupier of one had moved to larger premises. Another picture of the Central Hotel is occupied by two businesses, at a rental of £2 10s a week. The photograph in the advertisement was taken in the days of license, as the front has been altered since. Long's meat mart is empty, but Long has removed to a larger shop. The Temple Chambers have never been empty. The statements of bankruptcies included those from outside the electoral district. The statement that the Caledonian Society lost £'6l is false, as they made £6l profit. The St. Patrick's Day Association did not succumb through nolicense. The statement that the people have lost faith in Masterton had no foundation. Mr Hammond therefore wins. Palmerston N., November 29.' ■ A big no-license demonstration was held to-night, when the members of the Palmerston No-license League, Good Templars, Rechabites and W.C T.U., local Sunday School, Salvation Army and Palmerston North brass ' . bands marched from St. Andrew's Church to the Agricultural Hall. Here Professor Mills adressed an audience 'of about two thousand people. Wellington, November 29. Very disorderly scenes were witnessed at the Lower Hutt last night, when the senior cadets, under the territorial scheme, were to be sworn in. One hundred turned up out of 114 summoned, but all except ten refused to take the oath. The others indulged in horseplay, upset the forms in the u Sunday school room, threw cushions at a minister who attempted to restore order, scattered the official papers broadcast, and broke six windows witli stones. The men (? boys) formed a procession and marched away singing and shouting. A serious accident occurred at Butler Bros.' bush this morning, a falling tree striking a man named Driscoll and inflicting very serious injury to Lis back and skull. His condition is grave. In May last the City Council granted permission to the Wellington Boxing Association to hold professional boxing contests in the Town Hall, and, in accordance with notice given, Councillar A. R. Atkinson moved at tonight's meeting of the Council to rescined the motion. He objected to professionalism in sport. The Mayor contended that the Town Hall was the proper place for such contests, if they were to be held. Cr. Atkinson's motion, after a short discussion, was defeated by 8 to 6. Christchurch, November 29. A boy named Frank Williamson looked, down the barrel of a revolver he was shooting birds with, when it exploded, and a bullet lodged in his head near the eye. It is unknown if the wound is dangerous. His parents ' had ordered him to return the weapon to the shop where he bought it. The body of a middle-aged man was found in the river in the Domain to day. The body lias been identified as that of Andrew Dudgeon Purves. An inquest was held this afternoon, when a verdict of found drowned was returned. Dunedin, November 29. The Otago A. and P. Association's show opened to-day. The weather was fine but cold, and a very strong wind prevailed, making matters very unpleasant for the spectators, of whom a fair number were present. The entries totalled 949, as against 965 last year. The decrease was confined to sheep and pigs. (Waironga). Invercargill, November 29. A statement has gained currency to the effect that Joseph Hatch has lost the lease of Macquarie Islands and that Dr. Mawson has obtained a lease Tor two years. Hatch states that this is incorrect. What the Tasmanian Government did require was an undertaking that nothing would be done to interfere with Dr. Mawson's scientific research. This Hatch readily agreed to, nud he also gave a guarani!'j of similar consideration to the I Commonwealth Government should it I be required.
