MR BOYLE AND CONSISTENCY.

We have received a letter from Mr Thomas Boyle in which he deals with . the writer' of an anonymous letter signed “Consistency.” Mr Boyle is a trifle too lurid and picturesque lor our columns in the page and-a-half which he devotes to expressing his opinion of “Consistency,” and we accordingly pass on to the balance of the letter, which reads as under “He (‘Consistency’) would like to see friction between the No-License League and me, but his ambitions in that direction will never materialise. He dare not take up my challenge to Mr Hine: he knows the danger of such a discussion to his party. He accuses mo of being a political turncoat and therefore deserving of little serious consideration. All his silly accusations are surpassingly beautiful, and if I could only get your name,- Mr ‘Consistent,’ I would be in a position to handle you properly. Seven or eight years ago, when 1 was beginning to interest myself in politics, I was induced by deep cunning to listen to the devices of the Opposition, and 1 frankly admit -I was somewhat influenced. Just before the election, six years ago, I received from members of the Opposition party several letters marked ‘confidential,’ and inviting me to submit my name to a meeting of Oppositionists that was to select a party candidate. These letters are on my table in front of me now, and I did not take the trouble to have them photographed and distributed among members of the Liberal party. I can assure Mr ‘Consistent’ that they will never bo seen by any person, if I can avoid it, liecause I belong to a political party holding a high sense of political rectitude. I was astute enough to quickly estimate the politics of the Opposition at their true value. Yes. I soon cut . myself free from your political ‘ideals,’ for it is contrary to my creed that society should be divided into hewers of wood and drawers of water on one , side, and- a privileged class on the ■„other. Now, Mr ‘Consistent’, your , party rode homo to victory last election by a clever manipulation of the proposed Dairy Regulations, which had no existence, and I can tell you for your benefit that, this coast will he represented in the new -Parliament by Liberal candidates. We have no fear of the result of the coming con-c-test, and* though every conceivable trick' is i being worked by the Opposusition' we will re-capture the position S that we lost three years* ago;by want • of proper organisation. This letter must not bo taken as'a sample of my conception of how a discussion should be conducted, but as a reply ■ worthy of • the anonymous Writer who has neither the courage norihtmhcod to come into the open and attach his name to his epistles, as I have done. —I am, etc., THOMAS BOYLE.
