Melbourne, November 25. The Inspector of Aborigines in the Northern Territory reports the finding in a cave on the Roper River a largo quantity of remains of human beings of all ages. A native guide stated that many years ago forty or fifty natives camped in the cave r when a flash of lightning passed through and killed everyone. An aged native told tli© inspector that his parents took him to see the bodies on the day after the incident which it is estimated happened seventy years since. NEW CALEDONIA. Melbourne, November 25. In reply to a question in the Senate regarding the reported rapid and continuous influx of Japanese into New Caledonia, Mr' McGregor stated that the number imported to work in the mines were allegedly; some veteran soldiers. The Govevnment would keep the whole matter under notice. A BIG FIRE. Sydney, November 25. A fire in the main street of Carbeleco 'destroyed I '■eight' ’shops' and dwellings. SUBSIDY FOR STEAMERS WANTED. Melbourne, November 25. A deputation waited on Mr Watt, Treasurer, and Mr Graham, Minister for Agricultural, applying for a subsidy for the proposed Australian Steamship Co. to trade between England and Australia. The Ministers asked for full details in writing. They promised sympathetic consideration. MT. LYELL COMPANY. Melbourne, November 25. At the half-yearly meeting of the Mt. Ijveil Company the chairman regretted that owing to the strike the company was unable to declare a dividend. The shareholders adopted a notion thanking the directors for the judgment shown in connection with die strike. LAWN TENNIS. Sydney, November 25. In the tennis championship there was no lack of resolute hitting in Heath’s attack. There was no gainsaying* however, the acumen and unerring anticipation of Brookes, who included five love games, while annexing three straight sets. Brookes has chosen himself Heath and Dunlop to represent Australasia for the Davis Cup. A fourth is still to be selected. Brookes and Heath leave Sydney on Wednesday an the Maheno, Dunlop going later.
