Patagonia does not seem such a perfect paradise, as was anticipated, if wo may credit some of the reports received from the Welsh colony there, and it is likely to have almost as had an ending as the New Australia settlement did some years ago. South America is an uncertain land in many ways, and the promise it holds out is by no means always fulfilled. Though it is stated the colony has prospered considerably since it was founded thirty years ago, and the pioneers and their descendants now number about dOOO, they arc tired of Patagonia because conditions have become uncertain and uncongenial. Property, and even life, are insecure, opportunities for the rising generation are becoming more restricted every year, and the markets for produce are limited and unreliable. The discontent of the settlers has been growing for more than ten years, and in 1902 a number of families migrated to Canada, where they have found the climate too rigorous. Their departure from Chubut left openings in the colony for strangers, md some of the farms which have been sold by the original occupiers save fallen into the hands of Italians uul Spaniards. The presence of aiijiis in their midst has caused dissatisfaction among the Welshmen, and their desire to Hud a new home has been intensified by the passing of a hnv which compels them, as Argentine subjects, to give np their Sunlays to military service. This is even more trying than the exactions of New Zealand’s defence scheme, and the Welshmen do not like it. It is not surprising to find that they are 'ookiug towards Australasia, and as .vhite men of our own race should he welcome settlers. Australia and Now Zealand want population—of the right sort.
