ELECTRIC LIGHT.

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. NO DECISION COME TO. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last night for the purpose of considering the electric lighting purchase question. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Masters) and Crs. Sangster, McAllister, Healy, Morison, Lawson, and King. A letter was read from the A.M.P. Society, asking the Council to fill in an enclosed form of application for a loan, stating the rate of interest to be paid. The Mayor said the only thing to do was to Write asking for information regarding the rate of interest. They could do nothing until they know the rate. He moved that the clerk write and ask the rate. Cr. King seconded pro tern. Ho thought the correct thing was to fill in tlie form supplied by the company. The directors of the company were to meet on Wednesday, but they might not meet for some time after »that; and it would be better to state what interest the Council would be prepared to pay. If this were not done some other institution might have to be approached. He was sure there wore any amount of institutions willing to lend money—in fact, he thought there were many institutions overloaded with money which they desired to lend.

Cr. McAllister thought the company should be asked to supply the rate of interest at which they were prepared to lend. The company would not be liable to make a quotation until they were sure the ratepayers had authorised the loan. The Mayor’s motion was carried.

It was further decided to appoint a committee consisting of the Mayor and Os. Sangster and Morison to wait on Sir Joseph Ward to see about a loan from the Department. SATISFACTORY TIANO-BUYING.
