PREPARATIONS FOR TERRA NOVA’S 1) EP ARTUR E. MULES AND DOCS KEEPING vYell. (Per Press Association > Christchurch, November 15. The preparations for the departure of the Terra Nova for the Antarctic are being pushed on, and It is antici>atod that everything will he in readiness for the vessel to leave on December 15th. Various stores and requisites asked for by Captain Scott are coming to hand, and they will shortly be stowed away in the vessel’s hold. It is common knowledge that the Terra Nova will take down seven Indian transport mules and fourteen sledge dogs. Mr ,1. J. Kinsey, who has been aching for Captain Scott, states that in the event of the expedition not reaching the Pole this season, the mules and dogs would ho available as a reserve for an attempt next season. Even if tiie Polg were reached this season, a party would in all proliability be loft in Antarctica to carry on important scientific work. 'The animals would be invaluable to the party for transport work. Mr Kinsey is also sending down twelve sledges which wore required by the leader of the expedition. Six of those were presented by an Australian firm, and six wore procured from Norway. Snow-shoes for the mules and ponies are also being sent down. The nudes and dogs now on Quail Island are doing splendidly, and it is expected that they will be in line fettle for work in the Antarctic.
