A COMMITTEE OF ENQUIRY

Sittings of a special committee to enquire into the raising of rents has commenced. One witness declared that he was burnt out and compelled to take the first house available. Seeing his predicament, the landlord raised the rent from nine to fifteen shiK lings, and the tenant effected repairs at his own expense. The rent was then raised to seventeen shillings. The house was not worth more than £159. Other witnesses stated it was impossible to get a house at a fair rental.
