THE MAINE VOTE.
WHEN WILL IT BE SETTLED ? (Received 8, 8.5 a.m.) Boston, November 7. The final . figures for the State of Maine give a majority of twenty-six for the anti-prohihitionists. This result does not, however, settle the issue; it merely repeals a constitutional amendment. A legislative enactment, which provided for prohibition, was passed before the constitutional amendment was passed, therefore it still exists, and can only bo repealed by a referendum vote; consequently the State remains prohibition. Governor Blaistow decided on Monday to accept a correction of the votes of two towns, tluis reversing the previous result. tTor Press Association ) Wellington, November 8. The Rev. Mr. Dawson to-day received a cable from Dr. Berry, of Watorvillo, Maine, stating that the official recount showed a majority of 758 against the repeal of the prohibitory amendment in the State Constitution.
American papers show that the voting in Maine was on the following issue:—'“Shall the Constitution ho amended so as to abrogate and annul the amendment ado pied on the Bth September, 1881, relating to tho manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors P”
