A CHILD DROWNED.

IN THE LAKE IN VICTORIA

PARK

A sad drowning took place in the lake in Victoria Park this morning, the victim being the three-year-old daughter of Mr. J. Edwards, East Road. It appears that the child, in company with her young sister, left home, but Mrs. Edwards was not at first alarmed, as the children were in the habit daily of going along the road to play with neighbours’ children. However, they were away so long that she set out to look for them, but unfortunately did not go in the right direction. The children must have gone directly to the vicinity of the Cordelia Street entrance to Victoria Park, and from what can

bo gathered, the deceased child took oil her boots and stockings and waded into the artificial lake. At about a quarter to eleven, however, a lad named Jack Dodd, who was passing through the Park, saw the child’s body floating in the lake. Dodd at once waded into the lake, and with some difficulty, and at some danger to himself, towed the body to land. Or. Carbery was at once summoned, and was quickly on the scene, but though he endeavoured for upwards of half an hour to restore animation, his efforts were unavailing.
