Y.R.C. SPRING MEETING

WILAIII WINS THE DERBY

By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. United Press Association. Flemington, November 5. After a bleak and wiutery week, brilliant sunshine and a soutu breeze ushered in Derby Day. By noon the sun was hot, and the crowd almost equalled the numbers at some past Cup days, and tho stands, too, were crowded. A bright show of sprnig costumes was to be seen, tho whole making a brilliant effect. Lord and Lady Dudley and Sir John and Lady Fuller each brought a big crowd of visitors. The course was in good order, though not favourable for establishing records. The racing programme was particularly attractive. Additional interest centred tin’s year in tho decision of the throo-year-old premiership, also the classic race, as a guide to which tho three-year-olds running in tho Cup and Lho mile weight-for-age race, was also a big factor. It was regarded as particularly unfortunate that Malt King was unable to again battle with Comedy King, especially in tho light of late gallops. THE DERBY DESCRIBED

(Received 6, 9.20 a.m.) Sydney, Novomher 6

Describing the Derby, the “.Herald” says: —The lino was quickly broken by Posio, Durbans, and Cisco, while Crown Grant, Wilari and Jacatnar wore among the slowest to find their legs. Going out of the straight Jacamar got a bump wdiicli did not improve Ids chances. Opening up the river stretch, the leading division comprised Posio, Durbans, and Woolerina. The last-named ran past Posio at nine furlongs, and Posio faded out. After passing the bridge Wooleriaa lod along the hack to too sheds, where Radiator, Jacamar, and Flaith wore his nearest attendants. Meantime Wilari was gradually working his way from the rear. As Posadas and Woolerimi swung into the home stretch Jacamar, Cisco, Radiator, and Crown Grant were in hot pursuit, Wilari coming through in line style. Nearing the distance, Jacamar forged to the front, and bis victory was loudly proclaimed. Inside this point Cisco put in a claim, and the pair settled down to the fight. Wilari then appeared on the scene, getting on terms ere the half distance was reached. A groat battle ensued. Cisco had Jacamar beaten inside that point, but succumbed to the prowess of Wilari, who, finishing with the greatest resolution, beat him by a narrow margin, Jacamar finishing at his girths. It was a groat finish worthy of the traditions of Flemingtoh. The “Telegraph” says: All got well away. Jacamar swung wide, and was last to leave. At a mile and a quarter Woolerina assumed control. At a mile Jacamar was going “great guns,” and from tiiat joined Radiator in second place. Woolerina began to cry “a go” as the homo turn was reached. The first to enter the home scretcii were Crown Grant, Jacamar, and Radiator. Jacamar shot out, putting up a length lead, and shouts of thousands proclaimed his victory, but the winning post was yet a long way off. Radiator, Cisco, and Piastre, with Wilari on the outside, began to draw up to Jacamar, who was unable to stem the onslaught. At the half distance Wilari, Piastre and Cisco joined him. From that a cracking finish resulted. Though Cisco looked like reaching home first, Wilari, with a determined effort,, passed him in the last stride, and won amidst great excitement by a head.
