The Midland Railway Company have lined the minimum wages ol the lower grades at 22s per week for London, £i for large towns, and 19s per week for other places. As the arrangements progress the higher grades will benefit, too. BALLOT OF RAILWAYMEN. London, November 5. After a four days’ discussion a conference of the executives of four unions resolved to take a ballot of flic railwayman ns to whether they would accept the commission’s report or strike in favour of recognition and the all-grades programme. The ballot is returnable by December o. A resolution regrets that the Government had failed to arrange a conference of directors, which, in tho opinion of the conference, might have resulted in a satisfactory settlement. AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY WHARF STRIKE. MEN RETURN TO WORK. Sydney, November 5. At tho wharf labourers’ meeting an extremely rowdy section of young men howled down speakers proposing tho resumption of work. Deep-sea men predominated. They decided to accept Mr Carmichael’s advice. Mr Carmichael, in an address, declared the continuance of the strike would mean a blow to unionism, and possibly a death blow to tho Labour Government.
The vote resulted in a majority approximating six to one favouring return to work.
The shipowners express satisfaction, but state that they fail to see what grounds there can be for arbitration, as an agreement is already in existence, and the conditions arc not different to the conditions existing when the agreement was entred upon.
COAL-OWNERS REJECT DEMANDS.
