POLITICS AND POETRY.
(To the Editor “Stratford Evening Post.”) Sir, —I see by advertisement we are to have Mr Hine among ns again on Tuesday. I suppose during the last three years, Mr Hine has cost the electors of Stratford £9OO. I would like to know what he has to show for the money. My own opinion is that it would have paid them (the electors) far better to have given Mr Hine another £9OO to have stayed away from Wellington altogether. Of cotirse we have the “Hine charges,” but when reading the reports of these I feel as if I were sleeping under a wet blanet on a frosty night. I remember when the present was in power: money was 15 per cent.; the average workers’ wage 3s per day; 6d a day taken off platlayers to fill up the treasury, and when we arrived at “Poverty Point” they started a Soup Kitchen! Gone are the days of Tory “boss” and pay, Gone are the days when the Tories had their way, Gone from the earth to place of fire and woe: , I hear some gentle voices calling, “Brave, Liberal Joe.” He is coming, he is coming, with his head “not” bending low, I hear some gentle voices calling, “Brave, Liberal Joe,” Why do Tories weep, when their .hearts should feel for shame, Why do they sigh that their friends come not again, Gone from the earth to the place deep down below: I hoar some gentle voices calling: “Bravo, Liberal Joe.” Ho is coming, he is coming, with his head “not” bonding low, I hear some gentle voices calling: “Brave, Liberal Joe.” I am, etc., T. CUTHBERT. Pembroke Road, Oct. 30th, 1911.
