CORRESPONDENCE.

MO 1011 LINERS. ! NO EIRE MEN, RUNNELS, Oil ' SMOKE. (To Tno Editor, “Stratford Rost.”) Sir, —In reading the interesting article /on the hack page of your issue of Tuesday, tilth inst, under the above headings, it struck me as strange that the typo of oil engines intended to work tno propellers of these vessels was not mentioned. As several of the vessels mentioned as under construction have already passed under my notice in reading technical journals-—and those mentioned arc not actually the first that have been

built and engined with oil engines for the Atlantic; trade—l am able to say that nsaily, and possibly all, these vessels will" be engined with Diesel oil engines, the Mirrlees Diesel builders being responsible for most of those constructed and under construction in Great Britain, and the M.A.N. Co. (Mashineufabrik A.ugsberg-Nurnbcrg A.G.), together with Messrs Sulzar Bros., of Winterthur, for most of those being built on the Continent. The M.A.N. Co. are now building Diesel engines up to (5000 b.h.p. This firm are also builders of steam engines and steam turbines up to the largest size. It is only natural that clio British engineer should hang oil and wait till the Germans have taken the initiative and exploited the field, hence the small number under construction in Great Britain compared with Germany. As possibly the above information may bo of interest to these | who read your article and follow the I trend of progress in this marvellous (century, possibly you may see your ! way to publish it.—l am, etc.. WALTER J. NEWTON. Stratford, 23tli October, 1911.
