Hearst, the proprietor of tf;o “New York American,” interview eel recently, said: — “The same ques tion exists in the United States ar exists here,” he remarked, “hut 1 think in the United States wo are a little more reality to meet tiro increased cost of living with increased wages, and the consequence is that the oppression cf the increased cost of living is not felt so keenly. To my mind, the most important matter next to the aggregation of wealth is the proper distribution of wealth, sc that all classes may obtain a fair sh are of the wealth which they all in combination create. Good wages, constantly increasing wages, are a necessity in this fair distribution - , as wealth is constantly increased in any progressive nation. I think the standard of living should constantly he increased. One of tiro main advantages of our higher civilisation ought to he a superior standard of living, and with all the wealth that is being created In 7 modern intelligence and ingenuity and perfected machinery, the men who do the manual labour ought to receive a fair share. Then you would obviate strikes qnd the distress of an insufficient income.”
