EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Board continued its meeting yesterday', all the members being present but Mr Cargill. The matter of appointing a clerk pf works in connection with the rcercction of the Stratford School was brought up by a letter from the Stratford Committee, asking that the appointment be made. The matter was discussed with Mr Sanderson, one of the Board’s architects, who said ho intended visiting the work once a fortnight. Arrangements were made for more frequent visits, and the Board decided to do without a clerk of works. A letter was read from the Teachers’ Institute (Taranaki branch) in reference to their request that expenses of teachers transferred he paid by the Board as follows: “The Board’s resolution exactly states our position. We did not ask that a teacher who is promoted should have his expanses paid, hut one who is transferred to a school in the same grade. The matter was brought under our notice through a transfer of this nature. As far as we know, the- transfer was not asked for, .nor was there any financial ithorovemont in the teacher’s position ; in fact, the teacher suffered considerable pecuniary l loss, and in such cases we consider that the Education Department should make arrangements for the payment of the expense's of transfer.”—The chairman said it had been stated in the House recently that the .Department looked on a transfer as a new appointment. No action was taken. Messrs Fischer and Wildon, Whanagmemomv, wrote with reference to a lease of section 9, block 12, Upper Waitara. A seven years’ improvement lease would not bo satisfactory, on account of the cost of felling, grassing, and fencing.—They will be offered a ten years’ leaf.o on the usual improvomont conditions. A grant of £1 was made to the Douglas Committee for a bookcase for t<hc school library. The Hniroa Committee applied for, and were granted, Co for the improvement of the school grounds. Mass Lewis, sole teacher of The Dudley School, was granted sick leave.
