CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

GENERAL MEETING. A ceneral meeting of members of the Chamber of Commerce was licld in the Borough Council Chamber last night. ’ In the absence of Mr. J. Masters (president), Mr. W. P. Kirkwood (vice-president) occupied the chair. There were also present: Messrs. Hewitt, Wake, Young, Munro, McMillan, and P. Thomson. / Following on a recommendation from a public meeting at Whangamomona, it was decided to urge on the Government the desirableness of establishing telephonic communication between Tahora and Tatu. A resolution was passed expressing satisfaction at i the action of the Government in placing a vote of £IOO.OOO on the Estimates for expenditure on the Stratford-Ongarue railway,.and also urging that the line should be expeditiously extended so as/ to tap the Tangarakau coalfields. .''lt was decided ,to extend support to a suggestion by the Farmers' Union that the Government should institute a system of through booking of goods by land and sea, the Railway Department receiving the goods and taking all responsibility for their carriage. The secretary of the Now Plymouth Chamber of Commerce forwarded the following resolution passed at,last meetirig of the Chamber:— “That’ this chamber supports any effort to secure a uniform half-holiday for the Taranaki province, and suggests that Stratford, being central, take the initiative in this dcsiralbo arrangement.”—lt was decided to get the opinions of residents in other Taranaki towns as to a universal half holiday for Taranaki, Saturday being suggested. The secretary (Mr. Richards) reported i that recently he wished to purchase a ticket for one of the mail trains, but the ticket-box window was, not opened until both trains were in. and on the particular occasion neither train was early. In the regulations it, was laid down that the tic-ket-box; should be opened a quarter of I .an’ hour before the advertised, time of a train’s departure. He bad recently noticed several instances of rehiissness.r—On his motion it was decided to draw the attention of the stationmnster to the fact that the ticket office is frequently not opened at the.‘proper time.
