[Domitian, the son of Vespasian, obtained the Imperial dignity on the doatb of his brother Titus, A.D., 81. The commencement of his reign seemed auspicious to the happiness of the Romans; but he soon discovered the ,rickea|aess of his disposition, and gave way to the most detestable crimes. He assumed the title of diety, murdered or banished almost evert 7 eminent Roman citizen, bribed the * army, encouraged gladiatorial shows, in which ho sometimes took part himself, taking care to bo the victor and. killing his wretchedly armed opponents, and amused himself in catching flics, and sticking them on a bodkin. His cruelties rendered him so odious that he was afraid of his own shadow. He was assassinated by conspirators encouraged by his wife Domitia.]
