FORK AND BACON INDUSTRY.
NEW FACTORY AT AUCKLAND
For some time past the farmers iu the Auckland district have not taken up the production of bacon pigs as they might have done. This is very much to lie regretted, as there is no reason why a large industry should not be worked tip in connection with this valuable adjunct to the dairying business. Representatives have been making a tour of this district and have definitely decided to open up buying operations and thereby place the business on a satisfactory basis. Recognising tho developments that have taken place in this district in connection with the dairying industry, the company has decided to go on with tho erection of a most up-to-date factory in Auckland. For many years past Messrs Dimock- and Co.,' Ltd., have been the largest operators right throughout the Melson, Wellington, Manawatu, Hawke’s Hay, and Taranaki districts, but' it has only been within the last two.or three'yoars'that they have extended their Held t'o the Waikato, and sobbeneficial has their presence been in the latter > district tiu.it to-day the Waikato is turning out a very considerable number of bacon pigs. Previous l to the advent of Messrs Dimock and Co. the prices paid were satisfactory to the farmers they offered a satisfactory figure and to day the business is on a good pay--able basis to the farmer. There is no reason why the good benefits shared in other districts should not he enjoyed by the farmers in these parts. Any way*, the company'- now come forward and offer an assured outlet right throughout the year for all pigs that can he procured, and it only remains for t}ic growers in tin’s district to take up the fattening of bacon pigs in a business-like manner. The buying methods adopted' l by Messrs Diinock and Co. have' proved eminently satisfactory tir the fartriei 1 ? wherever they have carried on* their ojier.W iions. Weighing' scales Hro. hrhetod at suitable centres,-and •the 1 farmer on bringing to the stales'is given ,;i docket showing the actual live’weight, off which a deduction of 271 per Cent is made on bacon pigs, ' this being the difference between the live and dead weight of the carcase. A duplicate docket is sent on to the’ office; and a cheque is forwarded by return mail. It will therefore he ; seen that farmers are asked to take up the industry in an energetic manner 'without one penny of outlay on their part. It is to lie Imped that this opportunity of benefiting the district will not he lost sight* of,, and that the farmers will come forward with a determination to support a concern-that promises to do so well for the country. Messrs Dimock and Co. are the proprietors of tho works in Wellington which are claimed to he second to none in Australasia, the killing capacity of which is something like •100 or 500 per hour. All tho lahourious work, scraping, etc., is now covered by machinery, so much so that' from the time tho pig is slaughtered until the carcase ifc cut into haras and sides' ready for curing practically the whole operation is carried out by means of up -to-uato machinery. It has been decided to erect in ' Auckland a factory similar in type to the one in Wellington. This lias'been necessary to'enable Messrs Dimock and Co. to cope with the needs of the district, and we can only wish them success in their new venture.
