Wellington, October 16. In tho Public Works Statement, delivered at a late hour last night, the following appears regarding Taranaki railways:— Very good progress has been made with tho works on this line. Thesection- between Huiroa and Te Wera witti opened for traffic on the 20th Jlifie, 1910. , A further section to Pohokurn is finished, but is being retailed by the Public Works Department in consequence of its being requited in connection with the construction of, the next section. Goods and passengers are, however, being regularly conveyed, not only to Pohokura, but to the foot of the Whangamomona saddle on the next section, sq that the settlors are reaping the benefit of railway communication. Whangamomona tunnel, which is over 30 chains in length, is proceeding satisfactorily, tho bottom “headings” haying already met and enlarging to the full s i zo an( i lining are now befog pushed on. V Clearing and fencing on the Tahora section have been commenced, and the location survey of a further extension is in hand.. The expenditure on this line last year amounted to £76,234, and for tho current year I am asking for a vote 6f £IOO,OOO. MOUNT EGMONT SECTION. The survey of tho extension to tho quarry site is now finished, and clearing work has been undertaken, not only on this section, but also on the rope incline road, and some earthwork are now in hand. The expenditure last year , was £BB2, and for the current year a vote of £16,000 is provided.
