DENSITY OF POPULATION.

The census figures have progressed a further stage, figures now being available showing the density of the population and the result of the house and room enumeration which was included in the schedule. The Dominion is steadily settling its waste places, though 'the town population grows faster than the country. The number of persons to a square mile is 9690, the highest. ever recorded. Taking the dwellings and the population, it is found that there are 4.66 people to every inhabitable dwelling, a strictly lower proportion than at the previous census, showing that building operations have been keeping better pace with the population increase. In 1881 the proportion was 5.12 per house, but,it lias steadily decreased since. The following table shows the density of population in the various provinces:— Persons per Square Milo.
