AUSTRALIAN POLITICS.

(Received 13, 9.20 a.m.) Melbourne, October 13. In the House Mr. .Johnson declared that when the independent cable service was started, members were led to believe that three hundred newspapers were prepared to take it. 'They now found there were under a dozen taking the service alter over £2OOO had been spent in subsidies. The Government would do well to look at some of the scare headlines published in connection with the new service. As a financial transaction they were concerned in what they were subsidising, and the Government should not be a party to the misrepresentation of facts. Mr. Fisher declared that he could prove that the public had gained more then they had given up. He indicated that they might increase the term upon which the subsidy was payable, but not increase the annual amount.

(Received 13, 9.50 a.m.) Sydney, October 13. Another disorderly scene occurred in the Assembly through the Speaker ruling Mr Wade’s question, regarding the release of Dixon (one of the Lithgow strike leaders) out of order. The Opposition hotly resented the Speaker’s action.
