(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, October 12. The Court of Directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand has made the following awards: — Silver medal to Charles A. Cowan, for rescuing Jas. McLeod from drowning at Auckland, February 3, 1911; silver medal to Ceo. H. Yoyce, for rescuing Thos. H. Gardiner from howning at Lyttcltorf, July 22, 1911; bronze medal to Clarence C. V. Davies, for rescuing A. S. McPhail and John D. Connell from drowning at Waingongoro beach on April 2, 1911; framed certificate to Cecil Ellison, for ■rescuing William Carlew and Alfred Hart from drowning at Wellington on May 14, 1911; certificate to Albert Dent, for rescuing Harold Payne from drowning at Whangarci on June 26, 1911; certificate to Kenneth G. B. McLean, for rescuing Geo. Nixon from drowning at Auckland on November 80, 1910. Auckland, October 12. On Saturday the steamer Rotorua will leave for London, via Wellington, and will take the third shipment of butter from the Auckland province for this season. This will consist of 12,500 boxes, equal to 6250 cwt, compared with the shipment for the corresponding period last year, when the Pongariro took 11,279 boxes. The present shipment shows an increase if 1221 boxes, equal to about 10 per cent up to the present, including the Rotorua’s shipment. The export of butter reaches a total of 22,835 boxes, as compared with 26,105 boxes for the corresponding period of last year. Napier, October 12. The concluding session of the Baptist Conference was held to-day, being mainly devoted to the consideration of the Budget for the coming year and passing votes of thanks. The Rev. Dawson read a telegram announcing that a recount of the Maino vote resulted in a majority of 748 against altering the constitution. The conference decided not to express any opinion on the Bible in schools question. . The conference sermon was preached in the evening by the Rev. A shop in Thoodocia Street was gutted by fire at about 4 o’clock tin's morning. A Miss Hcrtzog, who was alone on the premises, had a. narrow escape and was injured about the head i.nd legs, and slightly burned before getting out. Rotorua, October 12. The first meeting of the newly-con-stituted County Council of Rotorua was held to-day. Mr H. W. S. King was elected chairman.
