THE SHIPPING TROUBLE.

C> OFFICERS’ WAGES

(Per Press Assowiiam )

Wellington, October 8. After a lengthy discussion yesterday between parties representing the Ship-owners’ Federation and officers of coastal vessels concerned in the Merchant Service Guild dispute, a committee was sot up, with Mr. P. Halley as president, to consider the question of hours of work as regards officers. The Guild fought strenuously to have masters and officers taken together, but on the Federation guaranteeing, in the event of a settlement being made in the officers’ dispute, it would undertake to meet the masters within a week, to discuss the increase of wages, the Guild’s representatives gave way. The committee met last evening, and Mr. Hally submitted certain proposals to the committee on the question of overtime, which is the main point of dispute. These proposals will oo laid before the Merchant Service Guild find the Shipowners’ Federation to-morrow morning.
