Christchurch, October 5

The t'lVo mates of tlic steamer Storm, which arrived at Lvttelton early this

morning, having given twenty-four liours’ notice of tlic terni'iiation of their agreement, wore pair: oil today. Efforts are being made this

afternoon to obtain t.ne services ol two other mates in order that the vessel might sail for Dunedin It is understood that on arrival of the steamer Ilolmdale, from (dreymouth, to-morrow, the mates will ho paid off, their twenty-four hours’ notice having expired.

Wellington, October 5

A conference was hold at tlic Merchant Service Guild offices to-day between the representatives of owners of small vessels allotted by the recent award of the Arbitration Court in the case of mates and members of the Guild. The proceedings were not open to the press. It is understood the owners submitted certain proposals. The conference then adjo i! rued.

A meeting of owners was held this afternoon to still further consider matters at issue. Up to the present the position is unchanged. The Guild has informed the owners that it de-

clines to accept the final proposals submitted by them. The owners will meet to-morrow morning to discuss the situation, and decide what steps should bo taken.

Mr Rogers, general manager of the Anchor line, states that the crews of the Waverley, Kennedy, and Alexander wore paid off at Nelson today. Those of the Wuimca, Kaitoa, and Niknu will ho paid oil to-mor-row, no mates being available. A few vessels are laid up at 'Wellington. There is a likelihood of the crews of several steamers 1 oing paid off within the next few days. Christchurch ,October 5.

By to-morrow' the whole,of the Anchor Company’s •fleet will be laid up here, ponding tlic settlement of tito coastal officers’ dispute.
