AT A HAWERA RAILWAY

MAN SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES

A serious accident, occurred in .Havvera at the Main Smith Hoad railway crossing early ou Thursday evening, when a special goods train widen loft liere at 6.5 o’clock dashed into a trap driven by Mr S. Tv.rkington, blacksmith, Whakamara, formerly of Ma.ngitoki. The accident, says the “Star,” was witnessed by Mr S. ivobinson, who states that as lie was walking in the direction of the crossing the • trap passed him, the horse r;ji’:ig at a fast trot. Shortly, afterwards an engine whistled, and the horse increased big. speed. The trap had jr.st got almost safely over the line when the engine, coming out. of the enttifig, struck the wheels. 'iiic trap was overturned, and the man was carried about ten to twenty yards before the train was-pulled up. Mr L. Kavanagh also saw tiie accident from a bridge in his own property. The unfortunate man, who was badly crushed, was immediately taken back to Hawera by the same train, and was living when he arrived at the station at 6.20 p.m. He was bleeding freely from a cut ebliind the left ear, and was removed to the hospital in an' unconscious condition. The case was regarded as hopeless, and the unfortunate roan, who passed a had night, died, in the institution at 10 o’clock tins morning. Deceased loaves a wife and family of six, who will have the sympathy of all the community in the distressing bereavement that has befallen them. Deceased and family only removed to Whakamara the previous day, where, it is understood, he was to engage in fanning pursuits. The inquest can hardly ho held before to-morrow, as the Coroner is away to-day, and witnesses will ho needed from Wanganui. It may be added that, though the crap was smashed to pieces, the horse escaped.
