CARPENTERS’ DISPUTE SETTLED,

Masterton, October 5

At a sitting of the Conciliation Council hero to-day, an agreement was arrived at in the carpenters’ dispute, fixing the hours at 44 per week and the rate of pay at Is old per hour, with other conditions, similar to Palmerston North and Wanganui.

CHRISTCHURCH BAND CONTEST.

Christchurch, October 5.

The band contest to bo held in Christchurch next January promises to be of more than local interest, for in addition to several bands from outside the district, the Kuril Kurri Band, New South / Wales, have notified their intention to compete.

WOOLLEN MILL DISPUTE

Dunedin, October 5,

A sitting of the Conciliation Council was held to-day before Mr Trigga in connection with the dispute between Dunedin and Mosgiol Woollen Mills employees and Ross and Glendinning and the Mosgiel Woollen Company. After a sitting lasting all day tho case was adjourned pending tho hearing of tho Canterbury Woollen Mills employees’ dispute at Christchurch next Thursday. Representatives will then he present from all parts of New Zealand, and it is anticipated an agreement will he drawn up as a basis of a Dominion award.

ELOCUTIONARY COMPETITION

Palmerston North, October 5

An elocutionary competition, promoted by the local technical school, commenced to-day, entries in all competitions being large. There was very keen competition in Shakespearian recitals for both sexes. In the Shakespearian dialogue, Miss Pole and Eric Lyon defeated Miss and Mr Byron, of Otaki. In the ladies’ Shakespearian competition, Misses Watson and Mumford tied, each scoring 92 points, and in the men’s Shakespearian there was a keen contest in the final between Eric Lyon and Byron Brown, resulting in a win for tho latter by 87 points to 85. Eric Lyon also won the men’s humorous recital, with Fred Pirani second.

CARGO PILFERING

Auckland, October 5

Instances of cargo pilfering continue to ho reported almost daily by importing firms. The latest complaint comes from Mosesrs Smith and Caughoy, who found yesterday, on opening some cases of drapery that had been ovcrcarriod to Wellington by the Eimutaka and shipped back to Auckland hy the Mokoia, that goods to tho invoice value of just on £SO had boon taken from the cases.
