EARTHQUAKE.
A VIOLENT SHOOK
(Per Press Association.) Hastings, October 5. A violent earthquake sent women panic-stricken into the street and stopped the post office clock at seven minutes past seven this evening. Buildings rocked in a most alarming manner. The only damage reported so tar is to the post office tower, which has been slightly displaced, several ugly cracks showing in the brick work. It started the post office clock striking, and it is still tolling dismally. Napier, October 5. A violent shock of earthquake occurred here about seven minutes past seven to-night. Many residents within doors were greatly excited, and rushed into the streets. Part of the coping from the top of the Provincial Hotel came down, and small pieces of plaster fell from other buildings. Several chimneys are also reported to •■ • have been shaken down. ' • Masterton, October 5. A shock of earthquake was felt here at 12.45 p.m. to-day. Waipawa, October 5. A very severe and prolonged earthquake was felt about seven minutes Sast seven last night. No serious amage is reported.
