STRATFORD CLUB. The annual mooting of members of the Stratford Lawn Tennis Club was aeld in the Borough Council chamber last night. Mr F. W. Wake occupied the chair. ANNUAL REPORT. The following report was presented:— Your Committee have much pleasure in presenting to you the seventeenth annual report, and in cqngi atulating the club on a very satisfactory state of affairs, both financially and otherwise. The position of the club as regards funds, as shown in the balance sheet, is highly satisfactory. Although on the year’s working a loss of £ LI 7s 9d is shown, this ones not quite represent the true position of affairs, as the balance sheet shows expenditure for turfing for two seasons ,owing to the alteration of the date of the annual meeting. r l lie excess of assets over liabilities to the amount of £GG 17s lid shows the vcjy sound position in which the club is. The subscriptions for the year were £53 15s, a little more than last year’s. The membership of the ladies has greatly increased, but that of the men has slightly diminished; nevertheless, the number of playing mcm-
hors is now greater than ever before. he income is jnsc sufficient to meet tue needs of tne ciul) and to pay the usual amount off the overdraft at tho Dank. The amount paid off this year was £’9 ‘is 6d, and tne total amount now left owing has been reduced to £92 2s. At the beginning of tho season tho club was registered under tiie Incorporated Societies Act, a matter widen has frequently been suggested by the committee for several years, and at last was taken in hand
oy tne last year's secretary, Mr Anderson. At tne beginning of tlio season a working bee wad formed wincli did very good work and certainly deserves tne special tnauks ol ti e duo as a whole for their endeavours to impi'ovo the property wren rhe least possible expense. Tne courts nave been kept in as good condition as possible during tne year, and have ucen well tuned and topdiessed by a competent man in such a way as to insure their being in perfect order for tne coming season, louring tlio season the duo played nine matches, winning five ana losing lour. Considering that in these matches tlio unmoor of games won exceeded those lost by 62, this may 00 taken as a very creditable performance. The championships of tlio dub were Loth completed, and were won by Miss Black for tiie ladies, and Mr Cameron for tbc men, Mrs Robinson and Mr R. B. Anderson respectively being the runners-up. A lianc:cap tournament for tropnies donated uy Messrs F. \V. Wake and J. R. L. Stanford was also played, and resulted in Miss Black and Mr Cameron iicing again successful in tlieir respective matches. The ladder challenges were responsible for some firstdass games, and your committee expresses me opinion that they tend greatly to improve tiie play of the members and are a great help to the committee when selecting 4 teams to play in matches. In regard to the -•ails to be used for tiie coming season, your committee has ordered twelve dozen Slazengors, to bo supplied in time for tiie opening of tne season. In conclusion your committee tli-sircs to thank those ladies who helped tho club by dispensing afternoon tea, to tiie members and their rfriends, and who took in hand tiie enKrtaining of visitors at the club’s giound on the occasion of matches. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said that personally lie would like to see the finances on a somewhat letter footing. However, tho value of tho 1 lull’s ground had gone up considerably, and if it was sold for some other purpose it should easily pay off the overdraft. Tho courts should lie in [list-class order for tho coining season. V big improvement at the grounds was the shifting back of the northern fence, which would enable tlio nets to be shifted periodically, as had been found highly necessary.- on grass courts, which would not stand tho naid wear of daily play.
Mr. Fussell seconded the motion. He said some action should be taken to face tho financial position. Mr. R. B. Anderson said provision ■i some sort should lie made for annual re-turfing. If this was not done the- club would in a few years run ' ver the limit sot on its-overdraft. He suggested tfia tho subscription might oe raised. The report and balance-sheet wore ■cioptcd. Election of Officers. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. W. H. H. Young; vice-presidents, Messrs. F, W. Wake, T. C. Fookes, F. N. Fussell, and Drs. Jarbory and Paget; secretary and ti fusurer, Mr. V. Crawsbaw; committee, Messrs. L. Curtis, F. W. Wake, U W. Vaughan, R. B. Anderson, and Voting; auditor, Mr. A. Coleman. Overdraft. It was decided to approach the guarantors of the club’s overdraft ivith a view to having the overdraft fixed at £IOO for the current year. Entrance Fee. Mr. Wake said he had moved last’ year in the direction of fixing an entrance fee of a guinea for men and half a guinea for ladies. He thought that tho time was now ripe for the institution of an entrance fee. Considering the accommodation at tho lourts, ho thought the club would not be wise to have more members. Mr. Anderson said the income should b". increased in some manner. Considering tho number of members, he thought there should he a credit balance on each year’s working. He suggested that an entrance fee he imposed and that in addition the ordinary subscription should be raised. Mr. Wako gave notice to move at i special meeting to be called later that the entrance fee bo fixed at one guinea for gentlemen and half a guinea for ladies. Mr. Anderson gave notice of motion for the same meeting that tho subset iptions he raised to thirty shillings for men and a pound for ladies. New Members. Miss M. E. James was elected a member of tho club. Votes of Thanks.
A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman for his past services to tho club, and also to Mr. Crawshawj tho secrotary, for his work during the 1 r.st season. W.Y.M.I. CLUB. There was a fair attendance of members at the annual meeting of the W Y.M.I. Tennis Club, which was held at the A. and P. Association’s rooms on Monday evening. Mr. George Griffin occupied the chair.
The following officers were elected: President, Rev. 0. C. Harrison; vicepresidents, Messrs. J. Masters, J. W. Boon, R. H. Cameron, and PI. Wilson ; executive committee, Messrs. Schofield and D. and W. Everiss; secretary, Mr. George Griffen. The courts were .reported to bo in good order, and the club expects to commence operations about the third week in October.
The records of the past are eclipsed to-day. The Melbourne habit of looking ahead is at the very apex of justification. The new Tailor-made Suits at 65s is a challenge in values. It’s a prophecy come true. An ideal built around a permanent principle. A supremacy that brooks no argument. Ncvct lias a suit boon offered for approved with so much confidence. Never a suit created and built embodying so many proven advantages. It’s a dominating suit—a twentieth century masterpiece. Take any one of the dozen now models for an instance. Note the now features; the extra, full length, the “cut in” at the waist, the new deep lapels, the wide rovers, the vest cut just a trifle lower; note the set and hang of the coat; the snug fitting of the collar. Note the new American shoulders; note the absence of exaggerated padding where the sleeve joins the shoulder; note the new roll collar and the semi-square cut of the coat. Trousers are cut just a trilie fuller than last season, with just that perfect hang and fit over the instep that only a master craftsman can impart.*
