FIRE ON A STEAMER.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, October 1

A fire broke out on the steamer Kent, now discharging cargo from Liverpool at Queen Street wharf, early this morning. She was working cargo ini till ton o’clock last night, an I everything was then apparently safe and the outbreak, for which no cause is assigned, was discovered about 1.50 a.m. The City Fire Brigade got the flames under control after an hour’s strenuous work. The lire is believed to have started in a crate of straw. The vessel has apparently sustained no injury, and the damage to the cargo will not he known until a survey is made to-morrow.
