TOWNS ’WIPED OUT.
GREAT LOSS OF LIFE
New York, October 1
The town of Austin, in Pennsylvania, w ith a population of 3200, was almost obliterated through the dam of the Bayliss Pulp Paper Company bursting. Six hundred are dead. The debris caught fire in the town of Costello, below Austin, and its population of 500 were annihilated. The survivors are of opinion that two-fbirds of the population arc dead. A twenty-feet dam gave way, letting free 500,000,000 gallons of water. The roar was heard miles away.

Practically every building in Cos tcllo was levelled by the torrent.
Even member of Senator Baldwin’s family, excepting himself, perished. The property loss amounts to millions.
