MR J. McCLUGGAGE AT‘MIDHIRST. A largely attended meeting of electors was held in the Public Hall, MidhiiVc, last night to hear the address of the Liberal candidate, Mr .Joseph McCluggage, upon matters political. The chair was occupied by Mr Alex Brown, who introduced the candidate to the audience. Mr McCluggage was very well received, and spoke generally on the lines of his previous addresses, introducing, however, new matter of interest concerning the remissions of land and Customs taxation made by the present Government. At the conclusion of the- address, which was attentively followed throughout, M, A. Walker moved, and Mr Mountford seconded, that a hearty vote of thanks to, and of confidence in, Mr McCluggage, and of confidence in the present Liberal Government. lie accorded. As an amendment to this, Mr Petersen moved, and Mr Mead seconded, that a vote of thanks only to the candidate be passed. Upon the questions being put, by the chairman, to the meeting, the amendment was defeated, and the original resolution carried hy a very large majority. The proceedings then terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair. Messrs Dingle, R. Masters, Kirkwood,, Mloalv,,..Morison,-/-Malone,. Por- - ritt, Sangstor and Hobbs w£re present at the. meeting of the executive committee of the A. and P. Association last night. The question of painting the caretaker’s house was referred to the building committee to report to next meeting. It was decided that the general committee ■should meet on the showground on October 12th. It was reported that judges had been chosen for all classes and that the gentlemen selected were being written to as to accepting-the duties. Borough ratepayers will escape the unpleasantness of being sued in the Magistrate’s Court by seeing- that their rates are paid by to-morrow.
