The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1911 WHEN TO RETIRE.

When shall successful business men retire ? This question lias been raised in America by the announcement that Mr Henry Clay Frick, aged 62, a multi-millionaire, and one of the twelve richest men in the country, has decided to surrender his vast interests to be managed by younger men, and he expresses the belief that this policy is the best to serve his health, pleasure and pocket. The American Press generally commends Mr Frick, who will now lie able to devote himself to the purchase of works of art, his favourite hobby. It is questioned whether the American custom of men working early and late right on to advanced years, and finally retiring from active business only when compelled by nervous collapse, is a good one, and many people are advocating the English system, which favours' ; week-ends in the country, regular holidays each year, and finally retirement at a reasonable age, when a man’s fortune is made. Some of the richest Americans still go to Wall Street every day, not because they want money, hut because of the heretical belief that business is necessarily good lor the health. Now there* is an increasing realisation that other views regarding business and longevity' are more acceptable, and people here are beginning to see that change from business to some healthy pastime or hobby is what Nature really demands.
