LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Mr W. Johnston, manager of the Bank of Australasia, returned last night from a holiday trip. Mr. N. Fulton is Government Dairy Instructor, not Inspector, as stated in our columns of yesterday. It is notified in the latest Gazette that Captain J. B. Hine has l)oen transferred to the Reserve of Officers. Maoris in the back-blocks (says the ‘Hawke’s Bay Herald”) appear to use strange methods when calculating what is duo to them. Recently a Maori youth received notice to attend a doctor for medical examination. To roach the place of examination it was necessary for the Maori to go some distance ni horseback. The journey there and back took one day, but the ambitions youth determined to lose nothing by it. Accordingly, he debited the department with two bags of chaff (about 1601 b), at Ss, two days’ rabbitting af fs, one extra feed for his horse, and (here is where the unselfishness comes in), one meal for himself. The department, naturally, viewed the account with somewhat mixed feelings—they don’t know which to admire most, the man’s unselfishness or the horse’s feat. About 0.20 on Sunday night the inietnde of New Plymouth was broken >v the clang of the fire-bells, says die “Herald.” The brigade received instructions that the “lire” was at the National Bank Chambers. They therefore hastened there, saw the ■himney smoking furiously, and quickly got out a load of hose. But nrir progress was then barred by locked doors and barred windows. Viter a few moments’ wailing a young fellow rushed up and inquired the •anse of the trouble. Me was told, and then he tendered explanations. It ippears the young man resides at the >ank, and, feeling rather'cold, he lit i lire. Soon after he hoard the lirebelis and rushed out and up to the Melbourne corner. He learnt that lht> fire was in the middle of the town, and dashing back, ho saw the above scene.
Mr. Jos. McCluggage will address ho elect,ns at Ag.uio to-night. A fourth chair lias recently been installed in Mr. T. Mercer’s hairdressing saloon, and further alterations to clio saloon are contemplated. The Rev. T. Fee will speak on Noi.icense and Dominion piohihition in tno Toko Hall to-morrow evening, commencing at 8 o’clock. All are cordially invited. Word has been received that Mr. “Barney” Brewer, at one time a popular resident of Stratford, and now of Waipawa, has just passed his final dental examination, and is a fully qualified practitioner. On Thursday last at Pohokura the members of tiic Pohokura Defence Riho Club gave a banquet in honour of tiie president, Mr. F. S. Dyson, who has resigned on account of his being transferred to the South Island. At the close of the dinner the usual toast list was gone through, and Mr. Dyson uas made a recipient of a handsome watch. Mr. Dyson feelingly replied? and a number of vocal and instrumental items was rendered, which helped largely to tiie success of the evening.
