*;■ RANFORLY SHIELD. -AUCKLAND DEFEAT POVERTY BAY. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, September 18. The Ranfurly Shield match between Auckland and Poverty Bay, which was played hero on Saturday in fine weather and before an attendance of 6000, was won by Auckland by 29 points to 10. ■' The run of the scoring made the game interesting. Poverty Bay led by 'I. points to 3 at the end of the first spell. Early in the second spell Auckland overran Poverty Bay, the local score quickly mounted t» 24. Poverty Bay then scored 6 points, and just -on call of time Auckland addbd another 5 points. Erekana potted a goal .and Douglas and Aorere scored tries for Poverty Bay, while Macky (2), O’Leary, Wilson (2), McGregor, and Bruce scored tries for Auckland, of which O’Leary converted two and Macky and Magee one each. Mr. F. Spur die, of Taranaki, was referee. THE NORTHERN UNION GAME. (Special to “Stratford Post.”) The Taranaki v. North Island native match takes place at Victoria Park, Stratford, on Thursday, 21st. : inst., and is creating a great deal of interest. The native team play a fine open gamh, and Taranaki are a good team in the loose, and intend to keep the game open, and the spectators are sure to witness a fast and open game. The Northern Union game is football as it should be played. The rules aire simpler than the Union game. There are no line-outs, and the player who kicks to scratch pen- , alises his team, for no matter howfar he kicks, the ball is brought back to where he kicked from, and scrummed. Another good rule is that when a player is tackled and the ball is fairly held, the tackier must Jet his man" go and the play* r must immediately get up and play the ball with his feet, consequently there arc fewer scrums, and, combined with no line-ont, the game is faster than the old Rugby Union game, and the public are sure to enjoy a good afternoon’s football.
