Jeffries, who was defeated on the second ballot for Geraldine last election, will stand again for that seat as an Oppositionist. A CHURCH BUILDING CONDEMNED. Timaru, September 17. The Primitive Methodist Cnur.ffi building, a part of which was erected in 1874, has been condemned by the borough builclihgs inspector as unsafe for use, owing to the weakening of timbers by the pine bore; - . 'J lie congregation will not rebuild at piesent, but will await the result of the union movement, hiring a hall in the meantime. A MEDAL FOR DEBATING. Wellington, September 17. The annual competition for the Plunkot medal in connection with Victoria College Debating Society was held last night. There were eight competitors. The - medal was won by ff. G. Hall-Jones, son of Sir William Hall-Jones, High Commissioner. Sir Joseph Ward, Prime Minister, made the presentation of the medal to the winner. RAINS IN ASHBURTON. Asliburston, September 17. After a three-quarter inch fall on Wednesday and intermittent showers during Saturday night, rain set in again at Ashburton about nine o’clock this morning, and continued steadily throughout the day. It will ho most beneficial to the country generally, and a good growth of all vegetation will now rapidly take place At five o’clock there wore no signs of cessation.
