RAIL WAY ACCIDENT. (Per Pr'ss Association.) Invercargill, September 15. The second south express to-night ran down the Express Co.’s cart at a level crossing at the north end of the Mataura railway station. The horse was killed, the cart smashed, and the driver (Patrick McCarthy) was found unconscious and bleeding frotn ’ the head. He was brought to town |jy train and lies in the Southland hospital in a critical condition, with serious injuries to his skull. McCarthy belongs to Waikaka, is 21 years of ago, and unmarried. A WOMAN MISSING. Christchurch, September 15. Mrs Charles Phillip Turner lias been missing from her home at Upper Riccarton since 10.15 a.m. yesterday. She left by the 11.15 a.m. train for town. With the intention of getting her teeth seen to, and did not return. She has been in indifferent health recently, and fears are entertained for her safety. -v SPORTS PROTECTION. Wellington, September 15. Mr Arthur A. Paape, of Invercargill, was to-day appointed by the Board of Control to be secretary of the New Zealand Sports Federation League. There was a very large number of applicants from all parts of New Zealand. The salary is £SOO per annum. Mr Paape has resided in Invercargill for the last four years, arid has bean closely identified with sports and athletics. He is at present secretary of about fourteen institutions, including the Southland Rugby, Caledonian Society, v. A’cCliriiatteaTicn tSociety, Clycling Club, and Hospital Saturday Association. Mr Paape will take up his new duties on October Ist, with headquarters in Wellington.
