PROTECTING PRODUCERS

(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, September 13. Proposals for tho establishment of an association to protect tho producers of the Dominion were discussed by the North Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union to-day, and a motion was moved to the effect that tho producers of New Zealand should form themselves into a Now Zealand Producers’ Association to 'further the interests of the producers of the Dominion, and that the necessary legislation bo enacted to enable the producers of tho Dominion to elect predators’ councils with power to- make ; levies for finances required for, the management of the Association! • Further, that the Dominion lie divided into six' of more districts, each of which to have a council elected ,by its members', 1 and one person to'appointed byeach divisional council to form an advisory board in London, the duty of which would be to look. v aftey the producers’ special interests and/ supervise the methods of handling the Dominion’s products. --s.flnTP. In tho course of a lengthy discussion Mr George Shcat warmly advocated that the .Hon. T. Mackenzie should he appointee! as tho representative of the New >Zealand producers in London, and stated that here was a no more capable Minister than the Hon. Mackenzie in the New Zealand Cabinet, and he would make an ideal High Commissioner. 1 ' Other speakers endorsed these views. Mr C. H. Ensor said there were indications that the Beef Trust was getting the benefit of the difference in the price realised by producers, which was 4d, as compared with 8d realised by tho distributors. Other speakers complained that certainly not the producer was benefiting by tho difference in the prices realised. Mr G. W. Loaddy moved ah amendment that tho motion be held over for a fortnight in order to ascertain if the Government intended bringing down a Bill to cover tho proposals, but subsequently this was withdrawn, and the original motion was agreed to, and it was decided to refer it to the different branches.
