FATAL GLOVE FIGHT. Chile, September 12. William Daly killed Adolo Morales (both Chilians) in a champion glove fight. THE PAPANEL St. Helena, September 12. Tho Pap.mui arrived with her bunkers afire. The emigrants were landed and the cargo is being discharged. (Received 13, 8.45 a.m.) St. Helena, September 12. Tiie Papauui’s crew was five days extinguishing the fire in the bunkers. Another fire broke out after passing St. Helena, v,hereupon the captain returned and moored the vessel close to the shore. The male emigrants arc being boused in the barracks and ■tho women in the military hospital.
PROTECTING EMIGRANTS. (Received 13, 11.40 a.m.) London, September 12. Thomas Carslake, of Finchley, was fined £5 and £4 8s costs at Highgate for acting as a passage broker -without a license. The Board of Trade prosecuted at Mr Coughlan’s instance, Mr Goughian finding it necessary to protect intending emigrants. Prompted by the success of the West Ham experiment the Victorian Agent-Gen-eral intends to apply to other London boroughs for youthful unemployed emigrants. Mr McLeod states that immediate employment awaits a thousand men in Melbourne in the building trade. 'DOVER TO CALAIS. London, September 12. The Rev. Swann, Vicar of Crosby, Ravonsworth, rowed from Dover to Calais in a twenty-foot skiff in 3 hours 50 minutes—a record. OBITUARY. London, September 12. Dr. Alexander, until lately Primate of Ireland, is dead. RAILWAY COMMISSION. London, September 12. A non-unionist gave evidence before the Commission that the majority of the men were against the recognition of the unions. The witness favoured a sectional Board, confined to the particular grade having a grievance, with an outside chairman. The witness added that non-unionists would have to consider the question of organisation.
