The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1911. THE COST OF LIVING.
That great problem—the cost of living—has become matter for alarm the world over. In France the food liors now raging are increasing in violence and are growing more widespread. Other continental countries Jan e lately passed through some serious phases of this question or are likely to, but so far no practical solution of the difficulty is apparent. In Jus Budget speech, Sir Joseph Ward referred particularly to this matter, and the opinion is expressed in Wellington that the proposal to set up a Royal Commission to inquire into the reasons for the increasing cost of living and to report upon Mr Uoyd-Georgo’s unemployment scheme, is not likely to meet much opposition, though the “N.Z. Times” thinks that amongst those who give particular thought to the question there seems to he already a general opinion that the high cost of living will be found to bo attributable to the high price of land. This is very probably a considerable factor in the state of affairs referred to. Whatever may the cause, it is certainly plain to everyone that to-day a sovereign will not purchase nearly so much food as it would a very few years ago, and though wages are higher, the position of the worker in the Dominion is not really better than when ho received lower wages and the cost of living was less.
