HOSPITAL SATURDAY. (Per Press Association.) Westport, September 11. Hospital Saturday was instituted for t!ie first time in Westport and district last Saturday, when the town collection realised £lls 10s, equivalent to £253 with the Government subsidy. Country collections have not yet come to hand. BUSINESS MEN’S PROTEST. Dunedin, September 11. At a meeting of the New Zealand Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association a resolution was passed protesting against the Land and Income Assessment Bill now before the House, on the ground that it will hamper trade to a serious extent, and press unduly on agents of foreign firms, who as a rule repudiate all such colonial taxes, which will fall on the agents. KNOX COLLEGE.
Dunedin, September 11. The Rev. A. Cameron is meeting with great success in his effort to raise ■ £IO,OOO for the extension of 'Knox College. He recently received a donation of £SOOO towards the fund, and now ho lias received £IOOO from Mr G. F. Bullen, of Kaikoura, towards the same object. X-RAY TREATMENT. Wanganui, September 11. Some time ago it was reported that Dr. Reid, medical superintendent of the Wanganui Hospital, had cured, by means of X-rays, a case of rodent ulcer. The doctor now has three or four patients under treatment, and they are progressing nicely. THE WANGANUI SEAT. Wanganui, September 11. Mr J. T. Hogan, M.P., announces that he intends to seek re-election against all-comers. DUNEDIN SEATS. Dunedin, September 11. At a meeting of the Dunedin branch of the Now Zealand Party to-night, the following candidates were selected to contest seats at the general election:—Dunedin North, Mr A. B. Barclay; Dunedin South, Mr J. E. MacManus; Port Chalmers, Mr A. McCarthy. EARTHQUAKE SHOCK. Wanganui, September 11. A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced at nine minutes past ten to-night. Wellington, September ]]. A slight earthquake shock was felt in Wellington at 10.10 o’clock to-night. Waipawa, September 11. Three sharp earthquake shocks were felt at 10.10 last night. Feilding, September 12. A very sharp earthquake shock was felt at 10.18 last night, and a second shock some hours later. Napier, Septetniber 12. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt at 12 last night. ANOTHER PRISONER ESCAPES. Invercargill, September 11. About 11.45 this morning, Albert Sims, aged 26, one of a prison gang working on the jetty, asked the warder to allow him to visit a shed in the vicinity, and was allowed to do so. Owing to the man’s extended absence, the officer visited the shod and found that the prisoner had gone, having changed into old clothes that had been hanging in the shed. A bicycle, which had been standing against a near-by building, was missing, and it is supposed the prisoner made off on it. Sims, who had been an industrial school boy, was serving seven years for indecent assault at Ashburton. Sims was seen later cycling towards Woodlands.
