LAND BALLOT.
:: ;; 'KEEN INTEREST AT HUNTERYILLE. : 1 (Per Press Association.) Hunterville, September 7. Mr James McKenzie, Commissioner Crown Lands, assisted by the Land Board, conducted a most successful bhllpt ‘ for Crown lands at the Town Hhll, ■ Marton, to-day. The land is known 'as-the Morinui block, in the TVaimarino district, and comprises an area of about 23,000 acres. Prior to the ballot, the whole of the lands had been applied for. Applications had closed at n a w o’filggk .There was a large attendance of applicants present at the ballot. Before the proceedings commenced, • the Commissioner addressed the applicants, pointing out that the Board had-.care-fully gone through each applicationtthd had given every deserving man ; a chance. Following the well-defined pplicy of his Board, people who worehot landless were rejected. The same rple tras applied to single worn eh; ; except ".perhaps- insuclr p. case' as a •daughter keeping house for a widowed father. The Commissioner drew attention •merely as a warning to the, penal clauses 7 of the Land Act. At the completion of the- ballot, ■ ventet n Applications were received for five sec-, tidns whieh remained unallotted. These will’ be baliotted for in Wellington shortly.
